Douglas DC-3/C-47 Skytrain The Douglas DC-3 entered service in 1936 and revolutionised commercial aviation – accounting for 80% of global air traffic by 1940 – thanks to a combination of capacity, speed, range, and economic operation which finally made passenger travel profitable for airlines. These same qualities suited it to military use, where, designated C-47, it formed the backbone of the Allies transport efforts throughout World War Two, most notably delivering paratroopers and towing gliders during the D-Day landings. Some 11,000 were built, and some are still in service around the world. In tribute, our DC-3 desk sculpture is cast in solid aluminium and polished to a high lustre, allowing its subtle curves and angles to catch the light.
