The unsung hero of the Battle of Britain Whilst the Supermarine Spitfire became the icon of the Battle of Britain, the Hawker Hurricane was, in fact, responsible for a greater number of enemy aircraft shot down; some 60 to 65 per cent. They formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command at the time, as they had been manufactured in greater numbers than the Spitfire and had entered service a year earlier. Although a slightly slower aircraft, the Hurricane was ruggedly built, easy to maintain and had impressive firepower. In tribute, our Hurricane desk sculpture is cast in solid aluminium and polished to a high sheen, so that the subtle curves and angles catch the light.
